The Tor of the Land Dwarves
The Land Dwarves no longer dig deep into the earth. They now dig pit mines that widen as they deepen. The detritus from the mine is carefully arranged to make solid, defensible, mounds called Tors. The Dwarves live in sturdy homes built of stone and brick atop these artificial hills. The false mountains are the only landmarks in the non-descript grasslands of Fyord. Each Tor is the stopping point for one fleeing clan of dwarves as they left the World’s pole following the Exodus. The Dwarves still dig for metals and gems but they do not dig shaft mines any longer. Their pits supply them with the metal ores that they continue to turn into amazing works of functional art. Blades and tools of surpassing strength and jewelry of delicate and amazing beauty. They trade these goods through a series of traveling merchants. Most of these merchants are adventurous dwarves from the Clan Stoutboot. Some enterprising humans from Veidentia have begun trading with the Tor to the South while traders from Ruffenacht have been trading with the Western Tor for a generation.
Each Tor has an out flung supporting system of farms and animal herds. The Dargoth Plain is dark soiled and the rains are plentiful so the farms produce well. The Dwarves have become remarkably good farmers and they rotate crops with animals to ensure that the soil remains viable. Many of the Tor had brought livestock with them which they have continued to breed while the furthest Tor have domesticated larger animals found on the plain. The most common Animals raised are a stunted aurochs like cow; shaggy furred and compact. These creatures, called Durm by the dwarves have been a staple of Dwarven diet and their fur and hides have supplied fabric and leathers for generations.
